AFI
Photographed on September 30, 2018, in Irvine, California, this image shows AFI frontman Davey Havok on top of the crowd, held up by the audience and connecting with the front rows. AFI started in Ukiah in the early ’90s as a hardcore band and later moved into alternative and darkwave. They were touring with Rise Against. This photograph is on exhibit at the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas.
I’ve been a diehard AFI fan since I was a teenager. Their run of “Black Sails in the Sunset,” “All Hallow’s E.P.,” and “The Art of Drowning” landed at exactly the moment I was getting into hardcore, and it changed the direction of the music I’ve chased ever since.
